To recognize Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield County high school students who are engaged in highly significant and innovative scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) research by bestowing upon them the Acorda Scientific Excellence Award.
Our judging committee consists of a scientist from Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a representative from Acorda, a retired science teacher, radio host Lisa Wexler, and a representative from Westchester County government. Additional specific scientific expertise may be consulted depending upon the application.
The ASEA is currently accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year. Applications submitted for consideration for the Fall semester are due by December 31, 2017. Applications submitted for consideration for the Spring semester are due by April 30, 2018. As part of your application you can upload supporting documents (e.g., tables, charts, graphs, photos or scientific papers) but remember to include your conclusions regarding the relevance of such data and statistics in the application itself.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. You may be notified at any time that you won. Winner interviews will be broadcast between November 15, 2017 and May 31, 2018.
After you submit your application three forms will be automatically generated and sent out:
1. A parent consent form. You parent must complete and submit this form in order for your application to be considered by the committee.
2. A teacher recommendation form. Your teacher needs to submit a recommendation form in order for your application to be considered by the committee.
3. A mentor recommendation form. Your mentor needs to submit a recommendation form in order for your application to be considered by the committee.
Once all three forms are received, the committee will review your application.
Joint submissions are allowed. If you and a research partner(s) collaborated on an independent research project, each student needs to fill out an individual application.
Winners will be notified via telephone and email.
As an Acorda Scientific Excellence Award winner, we want you to be recognized for your amazing work as well as have the opportunity to inspire future research students. Therefore you will receive a plaque for you and another one for your school. You will also have the chance to explain your research on a thirty minute radio show broadcast called “The Acorda Scientific Excellence Award” hosted by Lisa Wexler.
The show will be pre-recorded during the school week. The show will be aired Sunday mornings on AM 1490 WGCH. The show will be available in perpetuity on lisawexler.com and you will be able to download it at your convenience.
